Our fund management style - freedom to perform
We believe that star managers do not want to be told what companies to invest in and have buy-lists forced onto them. They do not like following an index benchmark, a herd-like approach to investing that compels them to hold shares in which they do not believe. That might suit inexperienced managers, but proven fund managers should have freedom to back their own judgement.
At New Star we have created a culture where fund managers are encouraged to be independently minded in their investment decision making. Their main reason for holding a stock is an absolute conviction that it will do well and they take personal responsibility for each investment they make. Yet they operate within a framework that goes beyond merely satisfying regulatory requirements. Control systems within New Star are central to our rigorous monitoring and compliance regime.
We believe that we have already assembled a team of outstanding individuals who can be relied upon to deliver the performance that we expect.
The New Star Select Opportunities Fund has now achieved a size of around £50 million. Given the fund's focus on smaller companies and current market conditions, it is the manager's view that raising an amount in excess of this figure may lead to potential problems over stock liquidity. The fund is open ended and can not be directly capped however New Star Investment Funds have undertaken a number of measures to discourage significant new inflows of cash and hence protect the interests of existing investors within the fund.
